Video Tools for Teaching and Learning

On November 2009 I participated in a workshop about different video tools we can use for teaching in our classrooms. As we were told and you may know, video is an excellent and potent tool for teaching and learning, specially in an online setting. You can communicate better with your students and both you and your students can present information to the class or to you.
In this workshop we explored 6 different video tools:
  • Screencast-O-Matic (video screen capture or screencasting tool)
  • EyeJot (video messaging)
  • Viddler (videoplatform) and Viddix (videoplatform) VIDDIX is a new, exciting videoplatform that allows you to connect all kinds of webcontent to your videos. This way you can really interact with your audience and deliver your messages more effectively.
  • UStream and LiveStream (live video broadcasts). Ustream is a interactive web streaming platform. It is great for host events, set up interactive conversations, create polls for your audience, etc. Also, you can look for the archived shows for a later review.
1. Screencasting
A screencast is a recording of computer screen output, also known as a video screen capture, often containing audio narration. Screencast-O-Matic is a FREE online screen recorder for creating screen capture video recordings. You do not need to download any software and you can upload your videos in their hosting. You work form your own browser.
2. Video Messaging
Video messaging refers to sending/receiving video messages to and from web browsers, phones, and/or email. Many of today's video messaging tools provide opportunities to do all three. Eyejot is a free online video messaging platform. You can create create and receive video messages in a spam-free environment. With no client to install, you can start using Eyejot immediately with any browser, on any platform. It even features built-in support for iTunes™ (and iPods™), mobile devices and social networks like MySpace™. Watch Eyejot video examples.
3. Video Content
You don't have to know how to create video in order to use video in your class. There are many sites on the web where faculty and other educators are sharing video lectures and other educational videos for you to use. Viddler and Viddix are videoplatforms. VIDDIX is a videoplatform that allows you to connect all kinds of webcontent to your videos, so you can interact with your audience. They offer free accounts.
4. Live Video Broadcasts
UStream and LiveStream (live video broadcasts). UStream is a interactive web streaming platform. It is great for host events, set up interactive conversations, create polls for your audience, etc. Also, you can look for the archived shows for a later review. With the UStream and LiveStream tools you can set up your own interactive TV channel, so you can broadcast live and you can record everything for later playback.
